Former Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe has put up more than 40 vehicles and other farm equipments to be sold by auction to enable him pay up his debts, auctioneers announced on Thursday.
Duly instructed by our most valued client we shall sell by public auction vehicles and farm equipment at Gushungo Dairy Farm on Saturday,” the auctioneer Ruby Auctions said in a newspaper notice inviting bidders to the sale on the farm.
Robert Mugabe, who ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years, owned several farms despite laws limiting individuals to one farm. He was taken out of office in 2017 following a brief military takeover and succeeded by former ally Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Zimbabwe’s Herald newspaper reported that it was not immediately clear why the family was auctioning the items but its business empire built up during Mr Mugabe’s 37 years in power, has been facing lawsuits over unpaid debts.
According to Mnangagwa, Mugabe, 95, was in Singapore for medical treatment and was expected back home mid-May, AFP reported.
