A brother of one of the closest associates of former Nigeria’s Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Umar Hammandikko has been kidnapped by gunmen at Njoboliyo in Yola South local government Area of Adamawa State.
Sani Umar, a relative of the kidnapped victim informed the police of Umar Hammandiko’s abduction.
Hammandikko is the younger sibling of Jauro Turaki, a close ally of Atiku.
DSP Sulaiman Nguroje, the police Public relation office who confirmed the abduction said the police anti-kidnap unit are on the trail of kidnappers.
According to the police, Hammandikko was kidnapped on Saturday night around 11:00 p.m. at Njoboli by five heavily armed gunmen who shot into the air to create panic and thereafter forced their way into the victim’s residence and whisked him away.
He said, “The abductors, who whisked Hammandikko away to an unknown destination according to the report we got from Sani Umar, were well armed to the teeth. But the police is now on their trail and they would soon be apprehended.”
But a source close to the Hammandikko family, who did not want to be named said the abductors had reached out to the family asking for an undisclosed ransom to set him free.
The kidnap of Hammandikko is coming a few weeks after a crackdown by the police in the state on kidnapping ring. The crackdown had largely tamed the activities of criminal gangs involved in abductions for ransom in the state.
It could be recalled that a few weeks ago, a permanent secretary with the state government as well as the stepmother of the senator representing Adamawa North, Senator Elisha Abbo, were abducted and released.
