Three armed robbery suspects were Sunday killed by an angry mob at Ushongo town, Benue state for staging an operation in the area.

The armed robbers were said to have trailed a vehicle from Cross River and attacked the passengers on the high way at around Tse Dansa, Gbatse in Ushongo, near the den of the serial killer, ritualist and kidnapper who killed and buried people in shallow graves.

The suspect’s names were listed as Terkaa Jabi, alias Gajere, Terkimbir Iorbunde Ahungwaor, and Paul Mbailuior Damsa.

An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity stated that the District Head of Mbayegh, Chief Nathaniel Hoyo, who was informed of the incident, called the police on phone and also mobilised youths to chase the attackers who ran into the hills in the surrounding area and hid in one of the caves.

He said a mobile police team and, later operatives of Operation Zenda joined the youths to comb the hills and cave where they arrested the suspects.

He said there was spontaneous outrage from the community against the suspects because, the robbery attack happened few days after the scandal of 11 exhumed bodies of kidnapped and robbery victims that attracted the visit of Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom.

He said the angry mob stoned the suspects and dragged them along the road before the police took their bodies and displayed them at the Ushongo police station.

Caretaker Chairman of Ushongo local government, Bemsen Agugu, who also visited the police station commended the youths and community leaders from the area for rising up to the security challenge.

He assured of his council’s readiness to partner with communities to rid his local government of crime.

District Head of Mbayeg Chief Hoyo, appealed to youths in the area to desist from crime and engage in productive activities.

He said God would bless and prosper those who engage in genuine business.

Police spokesman, Benue state command, DSP Catherine Sewuese Anene confirmed the incident and said what happened in Ushongo was not lynching but a continuation of the operation to rid the area of criminal elements.
