A sachet water hawker was nearly lynched by truck boys in the Apapa area of Lagos State yesterday when some group of boys descended on the young lady mistakenly breaking a truck’s windscreen after pelting stones at the truck boys to escape being harassed. The shoving and beating lasted nearly an hour before the girl was rescued from the hands of her attackers.
According to an eyewitness at the scene, a food vendor simply called Mummy Angela, the boys had earlier bought sachet water from the girl and told her to come later for her money that their boss was not around, which the girl accepted.
“Later in the afternoon when the girl showed up, the boys were teasing and playing with her, but she insisted that she was not there to play but for business. The play turned into harassment with some of the boys trying to grope her. To break free from their clutch, she picked a stone to throw at one of them but the stone missed its target and smashed at the windscreen of the container-laden truck nearby.”
But one of the truck boys, named Wasiu, said they bought ‘pure water’ worth N50 from her and told her to come later. When she returned, she was given N500 to return N450 balance. “The girl just turns everything upside down, saying there is no change and she will not leave until she collects her money. She then folded the boy’s cloth and started calling him a thief. The next thing she did was to just pick a stone and smashed the windscreen.”
The motor boy of the truck the lady smashed was weeping profusely at the scene, saying “Because of change, she started fighting me and then broke my oga’s windscreen. It is a lie that I was touching her.”
The lady admitted that she sold water to them and was back to collect her money. “When I came, all they were doing was to be playing and molesting me, and I don’t like people touching me like that. I warned them I don’t like it and they continued. That was what got me angry and resulted in the broken screen.”
