Protest rocks Osun state over hike in electricity tariff and petroleum pump price

Members of the Coalition for Civil Societies in Osun state staged a protest in Osogbo over the recent hike in electricity tariff and petrol price today September 4.

On Wednesday, September 2, the Federal Government through the Petroleum Pricing Marketing Company (PPMC) increased the ex-depot price of petrol from N138 to NN151.56 per litre, forcing marketers to increase pump price from N148 to N162 per litre.

Also on September 1, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) directed the various electricity distribution companies in the country to begin the implementation of the new electricity tariff regime which will see Nigerians paying more for electricity.

The protesters who were carrying different placards, converged at a popular park, Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, Old garage and marched to Ola-Iya Junction at about 9:15am.

They expressed displeasure over the decision of the government to increase petrol pump price and electricity tariff at a time like this when Nigerians are still dealing with the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. They argue that the increment is the highest level of ”insensitivity and wickedness from the Buhari-led government.”
