British No 1 Emma Raducanu has crashed out of the Australian Open after she was beaten by lowly-ranked Danka Kovinic in the second round of the tournament.

The reigning US Open champion, 19, playing in her first main draw at Melbourne Park, looked on track when she raced to a 3-0 lead in the opening set over Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic. But the 17th seed then lost five games in a row and needed a medical timeout for treatment on her right hand.

Despite battling back, Emma could not stop Kovinic from winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 on Margaret Court Arena.

The result put Kovinic, the world number 98, into the third round of a major for the first time. She will now play both two-time Grand Slam winner Simona Halep, seeded 14, or Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia for a spot within the fourth spherical.
