Osagie Ize-Iyamu emerges Edo APC governorship candidate

0

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu has won the APC Edo state primary, and just emerged the governorship candidate for the September 2020 election.

Imo state governor, Hope Uzodinma declared Ize-Iyamu winner of the direct primary election with a total of 27,838 votes to defeat Dr. Pius Odubu who scored 3,776 and Osaro Obazee who got 2,751 votes.

With the result, Ize-Iyamu will face other contenders in the September 19 governorship election in the state.

It can be recalled that the incumbent Governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki, resigned from the APC and joined the PDP, after he was screened out during the screening exercise.

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu had late last month been picked by the the Oshiomole-led faction of the APC in Edo state as their consensus governorship candidate.

Ize-Iyamu was named the consensus candidate in Abuja by the committee set up by the Oshiomole-led faction to screen about eight aspirants in the group.

The factional chairman of APC in the state, Mr Imuse, confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES that Mr Ize-Iyamu has been adopted as a “consensus” candidate of the APC.

“He was adopted (as) a consensus candidate yesterday,” Mr Imuse said. “He collected his nomination forms some hours ago.”

The party chairman said what has happened is a “welcome development” to the APC.

“It tells you the sense of unity in APC, for all the other aspirants to come together and present one aspirant for the primary. It shows the spirit of brotherliness and togetherness that APC is known for.”

Judge’s absence stalls kidnap kingpin, Wadume’s trial

0

Absence of Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja stalled the scheduled commencement of the trial of an alleged Taraba State kidnap kingpin, Bala Hamisu, also known as Wadume, on Monday.

Wadume and six other co-defendants were produced in court for the botched proceedings.

The prosecution and defence teams were also present in court.

But the 10 alleged killer soldiers led by Captain Tijjani Balarabe initially charged as Wadume’s co-accomplices in the case were absent.

They were not produced in court despite repeated calls on the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami (SAN), by activists, lawyers, and members of the families of the victims killed by the soldiers to arrest and prosecute the military personnel.

In the absence of Justice Nyako on Monday, all the cases including the Wadume case were adjourned till respective dates.

Wadume’s case was adjourned till July 1.

The 10 soldiers attached to the 93 Battalion in Takum, Taraba State, allegedly helped Wadume to escape from the policemen taking him to Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, after he was arrested in Ibi, a part of the state, on August 6, 2019.

The troops led by Captain Tijjani Balarabe allegedly killed three policemen and two civilians, while five other police officers were injured, during the soldiers’ attack.

Those killed in the attack included Inspector Mark Ediale, 36, Sgt. Dahiru Musa, 40, Owolabi Babajide, 24, Farouk Bashir, 30, and Usman Danazumi, 44.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, in February this year, slammed 16 counts bordering on terrorism, murder, kidnapping and illegal arms running against Wadume, eight alleged civilian accomplices, two police officers and the 10 soldiers who allegedly killed the policemen who took Wadume in custody.

Among the 20 defendants charged by the IGP, the 10 soldiers including Captain Balarabe were named as the 2nd to the 11th defendants.

But the AGF, on June 8, 2020, citing “bureaucracy” involved in bringing the soldiers to court, removed their names from the charges within days of his taking over the case from the police.

The amendment of the charges by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami (SAN), saw the names of alleged 10 accomplice soldiers struck off the charges.

Emma isn’t new to giving birth to heavy babies as her firstborn Aria, three, weighed 10lb 8oz at birth, and her second child Amelia, three, was 9lb at birth.

According to Emma, she gave birth in a birthing pool using hypnobirthing techniques set up at her home in Thornton-le-moore, Cheshire.

Speaking about her delivery, Emma said: ‘I birthed him in a pool with the midwife arriving with only half an hour to spare. ‘I only had a couple of puffs of gas and air and got away with no stitches.

‘It just goes to show what women’s bodies are capable of and a nice reassurance for those that are predicted to have big babies.’

However, Atticus doesn’t take the record for the biggest baby in the UK, a title that belongs to baby Anila, who weighed in at 12 pounds and 6 ounces last year.

According to the NHS, the average weight of a baby girl is 3.3kg (7.27 lbs) and for boys, it is 3.4kg (7.49 lbs).

Family of man who died in detention demand answers from the Nigerian police

0

The family of a man named Godwin Chukwudi Julius Akano, 48, who died while in police detention, are asking for answers from the police.

The late Julius, an importer of goods from Europe, was arrested on May 22 for alleged complicity in a case of fraud with one Obinali Osunwoke. He was arrested alongside his wife, Ogochukwu, but she was later released in the evening of the same day.

Julius died in police custody on Saturday June 6.

His family are now asking for an explanation from the State Criminal Intelligence Investigation Department, SCIID, Panti.

The spokesman for the family, Mr Nnamdi Akano, said the late Julius, despite obvious signs of serious illness and complaints, was denied medical help until it was too late.

Akano said: “He ought to have been given or allowed medical help and then face whatever charges the police have against him. He was an importer, a breadwinner for his family with a wife and four children that are now left to bemoan the crude fate that befell them and a future without their beloved father.”

Obinali Osunwoke, who was in custody with Julius and watched the ill-fated drama unfold, said: “I was arrested a day after my brother, Julius, and I was with him throughout his detention until he died.

“I was picked up on Saturday, May 23. From the first day, we were arrested and our people came to bail us, the police refused to grant us bail.

“The case was directly under ASP Oketunji. My people went and requested bail for us while the police continued with their investigations. He refused, so they approached Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Longe, who is the head of Panti Unit.

“When they met the woman, she said she could not do anything and that the police should be allowed to do their work. That was how we were detained.”

Osunwoke said they were kept in a crowded cell and it was not conducive for Julius’ health.

He said: “My brother had been complaining of not being strong to our Investigating Police Officer (IPO), Mr Adebowale.

“To be honest with you here, the IPO, as a human being, was very good to us. He did everything he could. When we talked about drugs, because Julius was hypertensive, the IPO will go and bring them.”

Julius’ family alleged that the deceased was denied medical attention while in the detention despite the advice of two police doctors.

According to Osunwoke, medical personnel at the Police Clinic recommended that Julius should be released, yet he was not until he died at Yaba Military Hospital.

Osunwoke recalled: “When we got there, it took about one hour to get his details. It was not treated as an emergency. This was between 10:30 am and 11:00 am.

“My brother was breathing with difficulty and sweating profusely. They went and brought an oxygen tank, and put an oxygen mask on his nose. He took a deep breath, slumped, and died. The doctor tried to resuscitate him, but later was saying there was no life.

“After some time, they came again removed the face mask and brought something like cotton wool, opened his mouth, they pushed the long thing and brought it out. They also asked me to open his nose. I told them that nobody should come and tell me that he is COVID-19 positive, he is not.”

Reacting, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Elkanah Bala, said Julius was detained on court order for his complicity in a fraudulent transaction, but he took ill and died. He added that the suspect did not die in police cell but in the Covid-19 isolation centre at Yaba.

“From the brief I got, he was detained on a court order on the allegations of using federal government documents to defraud an international organisation.

“They were two suspects arrested for international fraud, running into several millions. They were charged to the court for fraud. But the court remanded them in police custody because the Correctional Centres don’t accept inmates. So the burden was on us to keep the suspects.

“Along the line, one of them, Julius developed some symptoms, the police rushed him to police hospital Falomo, where he was referred to Isolation centre, Yaba, where he died. Because of his death, we granted the second suspect bail to go into isolation so that he will not infect other suspects in our cell. The symptoms is that of COVID-19”.

But the family’s spokesperson, Akano is asking why the police waited until it was too late to get Julius medical help.

He said: “My brother was traced by the police and arrested on May 22. He was accused of fraud/forgery with one Obinali Osuwoke. When he was arrested and interrogated by the police over a certain amount in his account, he explained to them that it was a friend’s money. He subsequently took them to the person through which the money came into his account (Obinali Osunwoke).

“When he got to the police and explained the whole situation the head of Panti, Mrs. Yetunde O. Longe, a deputy commissioner of police, wanted to release him on bail so that he could come whenever he was needed. But her deputy, Mr. Oketunji, an assistant commissioner of police, refused saying that granting him bail would jeopardize the investigation. Consequently, the late Godwin Julius was detained.

“As a family, we are bitter and we are calling for an investigation. Why did the police refuse doctors’ advice to take our brother for proper treatment until he collapsed and consequently died.”

Victor Giadom’s expulsion from APC is ineffective and a contempt of court – Giadom’s Lawyers

0

Chief Victor Giadom, the self-installed acting National Chairman o, has stated that his expulsion from the All Progressives Congress (APC) is ineffective and should be disregarded by the general public.

Giadom who is the Deputy National Secretary of the APC, on Saturday announced that he was the ruling party’s acting chairman as he had secured a court order which backed his resumption as the Acting Chairman of the APC, even though another high court in Rivers state had restrained Giadom from parading himself as chairman of the APC.

On Sunday, Livingstone Wechie, the Media Adviser to the Acting Chairman of the APC in Rivers state Igo Aguma, said Giadom was suspended from the party over alleged acts of gross infractions of the party’s Constitution.

Giadom has now come out to refute Wechie’s claims, saying it is ineffective. Taking to his Twitter handle, he wrote; ”Read this carefully i am protected’ alongside photo of the court order granting him power to continue as Acting National chairman of the party.”

Victor Giadom

In a press statement released Monday June 22, by his legal representative, Chief Oluwole Afolabi ESQ, Giadom said the expulsion was done against the order of an FCT High Court issued on 16th March and updated in June, therefore it was null and void.

Read the press release below.

PRESS RELEASE BY CHIEF OLUWOLE AFOLABI, ESQ,
PURPORTED EXPULSION OF CHIEF VICTOR GIADOM FROM THE APC
Our attention has been drawn to a Statement purportedly issued by a Livingstone Wechie, Media Adviser to the APC Rivers state Chairman, Chief Igo Aguma to the effect that the Acting National Chairman of APC, Chief Victor Giadom has been suspended from the Party.
We wish to state that the statement and the purported expulsion were done contemptuously of the order of the FCT High Court issued on 16th of March, 2020, by Hon. Justice S.U Bature in Suit No. FCT/HC/M/6447/2020 which imbued Chief Victor Giadom with the authority to act as the National Chairman of the Party following the suspension of Adams Oshiomhole as the National Chairman.
The law is trite that a member of a political party cannot be suspended from the party while he’s in court asserting a vested right as a member of the party. By attempting to suspend Chief Giadom from the party, the characters involved are trying to force a fait accompli on the court and thereby tie the hands of the court.
A similar conduct orchestrated by the PDP to expel RT. Hon. Amaechi from the party while he was in court challenging the results of the Rivers State Governorship election was condemned and rejected by the Supreme Court.
The purported expulsion of Chief Giadom is ineffective and contemptuous.
We hereby urge INEC, law enforcement agencies and the general public to disregard the news of the purported expulsion of Chief Victor Giadom.
In line with the provisions of the Constitution of the APC, as affirmed by the Order of S.I.U. Bature J. and a plethora of legal authorities, Chief Victor Giadom remains the Acting National Chairman of the APC.
Kindly find attached the said Court Order.
Thank You,
CHIEF WOLE AFOLABI,
Counsel to Chief Victor Giadom

Justin Bieber has reacted to the sexual assault allegation made against him by a Twitter user identified simply as “Danielle”.

The lady who tweeted from an anonymous account on Saturday night (June 20) which was taken down after Bieber publicly commented on allegation, claimed the incident took place at a hotel in Austin, Texas on March 9, 2014. She said she met Bieber while attending an event in Texas and claimed that she and her friends were invited back to the pop star’s hotel where she was “sexually assaulted without consent.” She, however, failed to give out the names of her friends.

He also disclosed that he did not stay at the Four Seasons (location of the alleged incident) but spent the night of March 9, 2014 at an Airbnb and March 10, 2014, at the Westin. Bieber further revealed that he attended the show with his then-girlfriend, Selena Gomez. He added that he will be working with Twitter and authorities to take legal action against his accuser.

He tweeted;

“Rumors are rumors but sexual abuse is something I don’t take lightly. wanted to speak out right away but out of respect to so many victims who deal with these issues daily I wanted to make sure I gathered the facts before I made any statement.

“In the past 24 hours a new Twitter appeared that told a story of myself involved with sexual abuse on March 9, 2014 in Austin Texas at the Four seasons hotel. I want to be clear. There is no truth to this story. In fact as I will soon show I was never present at that location.

“As her story told I did surprise a crowd in Austin at Sxsw where I appeared on stage with my then assistant side stage and sang a few songs. What this person did not know was that I attended that show with my then gf Selena Gomez.

“Every claim of sexual abuse should be taken very seriously and this is why my response was needed. However this story is factually impossible and that is why I will be working with twitter and authorities to take legal action.”

Five Dead As Cholera Hits Bayelsa And Delta

0
Tragedy as five people reportedly feared dead after cholera outbreak hit about 10 communities in Delta and Bayelsa states.
Leaders of the endangered communities believe that the deaths resulted from drinking polluted water and eating fishes which died from pollution.
Community leaders implored the Federal Government to look into the situation and sanction the polluters, and stop their hardship.
According to High Chief Augustine Seibi who led other leaders to a meeting at the weekend, “Some deaths have occurred in several communities because of this pollution.
In Sokoh, for example, we lost three persons (Johnson Pabebe, Adoere Epreyofie, and Pa Ogbuma Ingologolo).
Ekeremor Federated Communities also lost Ekerenwei Igenisuode and his wife, Yeikonne.
“They died of cholera, which resulted from the polluted water we drink and dead fish. That is why we need a cottage hospital and government’s intervention to allay the hunger and hardship facing us.”
Seibi said the communities had reasons to believe oil companies were responsible for the pollution.
“It is their explorative activities, as in most oil spills, that could contaminate the waters occasioning the death of fishes and other aquatic organisms.
These are further driven by the tidal flow deposited on the shores of communities and other uninhabited environments.”
